Chapter 3:
He couldn’t sleep all night, he had messed up big time, how was he supposed to know that his mom switched his handkerchief with the one that had his name on it? What did Yuto think about it? Did he even care? Multiple excuses continued to play throughout his mind in case Yuto were to ask. He had been prepared for it all day.
To his surprise, during the photo shoot, Yuto did not approach him, not even once. Although he had dreaded the situation he felt his face falter when Yuto walked right past him and straight to Keito. He could see them together; Yuto was giggling happily, the usual Yuto-like expressions he had longed to see. The ones he rarely showed anymore. If only Yuto showed him such expressions rather than the pallid, fake smiles he always received. He was jealous, so goddamn jealous.
‘Damn you Keito...’he scorned.
“Hey if you keep that up you won’t have any juice left.” Ryutaro inquired pointing to the juice box that was being crushed between Chinen’s hand; the purple liquid oozed all over the table.
“Oh Ryutaro,” he said, grabbing tissues from the table and quickly wiping away the mess, “I didn’t see you. Hey can I ask you, what’s the relationship between those two?”
Ryutaro wrinkled his nose, “Uh...they work together in Hey! Say! JUMP?” he replied not sure of what kind of answer Chinen was looking for.
“No, not that, I mean when were they so close? I don’t remember seeing them much together before.”
“Oh, well Yuto and Keito got close this year because they’re band members, I think he’s been teaching him the guitar, also Yuto’s been having some family problems so he slept over at Keito’s a couple of times.” Ryutaro explained somewhat uninterested with the topic.
Ignoring Ryutaro, Chinen’s mind went ballistic, ‘What? Yuto has been sleeping over...sleeping over…at Keito’s, what is this?! How dare he, how many times?! Don’t tell me they...could they have? Agh!’ he was now clutching the sides of his head, the not so innocent thoughts infiltrated the young boy’s mind, an agonized expression written on his face. After dying a couple of times in his own thoughts, he realized something else Ryutaro had said.
“Family problems?” he blinked, his head finally clearing, “what kind of problems?”
“You didn’t hear? Well I guess you and Yuto aren’t really that close, it seems his parents might get a divorce. He’s been down this past month, I saw him crying once by himself in the dressing room, the poor guy.” Ryutaro frowned.
“A divorce?” he repeated. Chinen was surprised, wasn’t Yuto’s family perfect, but it made a lot of sense now as to why Yuto wasn’t his usual happy self. Yuto cared for his family a lot; he always spoke so much about them so it was quite alarming to even hear that such a family could have problems.
“What about Raiya?” he asked, coated with concern.
“He’s been on a school trip so he has no idea what’s going on.”
“So Yuto has been dealing with this problem all by himself, this entire time?”
“Yeah,” he frowned but then confusion overtook his face, “wait a minute, why do you care? I mean, don’t you hate Yuto?”
“I-I don’t hate him.” His nervousness caused his voice to shake making him sound insincere.
“Really?” he looked even more confused now, “but... but you’re so mean to him, all of us thought you hated him because you were always being really mean to him. Yuto, out of all people, knows how much you hate him the most, that’s why he always avoids talking to you now. Look, whatever happened between you two, I won’t poke my nose in where I’m not supposed to, but I think you should really give the guy a break for now. He really looks like he’ll break any second.”
“Ryutaro, you’re up!” the manager called.
“Oh! My turn! Yeah I’m going now but remember what I said, try to be nice to the guy okay?” hurriedly, he ran towards the shoot.
Looking at Ryutaro leave, he once again turned towards the laughing pair in front of him. He sighed and swallowed a bit; he had no right to be jealous of Keito. He didn’t want to see them anymore, feeling suffocated he decided to leave the room.

The night in Tokyo was filled with lit up lamps aligning the streets, no stars could be seen as the silent city was interrupted by the sound of roaring car engines.
Yuto slumped his back against the bench, “Itadakimasu” he said to no one in particular. Opening the wrapper of the burger, he took a small bite, eating as slowly as possible. He was so depressed and lonely. Inside, he craved his mother’s homemade dinner as the family would gather around the table grabbing at each marvellous dish.
Reality was cruel, he didn’t dare go home; he didn’t want to see his parents arguing anymore. Hearing them everyday like that depressed him and it wasn’t like he could ask to sleep over at Keito’s all the time. He didn’t want to be a bother or take advantage of another’s hospitality either.
In truth, it wasn’t his first time eating dinner alone; he had been doing this for about a week and a half. He would sit at this same bench, would do his homework at the library and slip in early morning and then leave for school. By this time, he was already accustomed to it all, although he still found it kind of difficult to finish his afternoon homework on time, so he was forced to finish it during lunch hours.
Munching on a fry, he rummaged through his pockets with his clean hand and pulled out the handkerchief. ‘Chinen Yuri’ he read it again. It was definitely Chinen’s; there was no one else at Horikoshi with the same name. He blew into the night air, somewhat chilly today he saw his breath create a mist of smoke. He had failed to return the handkerchief to Chinen today, in truth he was scared to talk to him.
Chinen for sure hated him; he didn’t know what the reason was but instead of feeling mad at Chinen for being unreasonable he just felt hopelessly depressed. His accumulation of problems didn’t help his emotions either and he feared if Chinen yelled at him he most definitely would break.
Wiping any leftover salt from his fingers onto a napkin he threw the bag of leftover wrappers into the garbage can beside him and stared at the handkerchief. Why would Chinen leave his handkerchief on his desk? Why was he even there in the first place, confusion boggled his mind. Thinking back onto that day, he recalled crying in his sleep, did that mean Chinen was watching him? He sunk lower into the seat feeling his cheeks warm from embarrassment.

Chinen had been walking restlessly for hours. He needed to cool his head, Ryutaro’s words repeated over and over in his mind, ‘Yuto, out of all people, knows how much you hate him the most, that’s why he always avoids talking to you now.’
‘Damn it!’ he thought bitterly, ‘Yuto thinks I hate him? I don’t hate him, I’m totally screwing up and now I can’t even talk to him anymore.’ He was going insane, no longer knowing what he was doing. He hated himself. He didn’t even know what he wanted anymore.
He began to run on the sidewalks trying to relieve a bit of his stress, he just wanted to get away, away from it all, these feelings that weren’t making him himself anymore.
Most of all, he missed Yuto, he missed him so much. He was torturing himself; he couldn’t even act the way he wanted to around Yuto anymore because Yuto probably hated him for being such a total dick. That was the perfect word to describe what he thought of himself, a total dick. He wanted to punch himself.
“I miss you,” he said into the night feeling his chest tighten, “I miss you so much, I want to see you.” His voice grew quieter. He had stopped running now; trying to catch his breath, running really was never his forte.
Gasping for air with both hands on his knees, he looked up to see a familiar sight. From a distance, he could see a boy around his age wearing a purple cap that he knew all too well who it belonged to. The boy was seated on a bench with his head bent down, could it be Yuto? Was he dreaming?
His foot was rooted in the spot; one side of him told himself to turn around and pretend he never saw anything. The other part of him wanted so much to go over and see him, before he could even think or plan what to say, he was already heading towards the direction of the bench.
Getting closer, he could see that it was indeed Yuto. Yuto hadn’t noticed him yet; his head was bent down; still looking at something in his hand, recognizing his own handkerchief he made a noise from his throat unintentionally causing the other boy to look up.
They stared at each other, both just looking at one another in awkward silence. Chinen was feeling very uncomfortable; he hadn’t prepared anything and had forgotten all of the multiple excuses he had rehearsed in the morning.
“Hey,” he said dumbly.
“Hey.” Yuto replied, his voice smaller than usual, he cleared his throat and said “this is yours; you left it on my desk.”
That was all Yuto had to say? He worried himself all night for this? Getting angry out of embarrassment he yelled out without thinking, “Keep it! I dropped it by accident on your desk; I don’t want to use it if the filthy Yuto has touched it!” His voice sounded angry and disgusted. ‘When will I learn to shut up?’ he thought beating himself up inside. He looked over at Yuto, once again it was that smile, that smile that he hated so much. His eyes were shut while his mouth was curled into a small grin; it tormented him to see such an expression.
Suddenly a tear fell out of one of Yuto’s shut eyes and he gasped as more began to fall. The smile slowly disappeared and he lowered his face pulling his cap down.
“Yuto are you crying?” he was panicking, Yuto had never cried before, he had never seen him smile and cry in such a way. He was terrible; he was such a jerk, even when Ryutaro had warned him he had screwed up again. He should’ve gone home.
“It’s okay,” Yuto replied tears now falling uncontrollably; “It’s alright if you think I’m filthy and you hate me. Nobody loves me anyway, Mama and Papa don’t care about me anymore so who would care about someone like me? You know what Johnny-san said? He said I wasn’t cute enough anymore so that’s why he replaced me with Nakayama. It’s not my fault; I don’t like being this tall either. I’m sure if I was cute like you or Yamada then Mama and Papa would still love.” He was bawling now not making much sense, saying random things because he had held it in for too long, “But it’s okay Chinen, it’s not your fault, I’m sure it was mine, everything I do is wrong, but I’ve decided, I’m going to leave, I’m going to leave JE for good, I’m not really needed and since Chinen hates me so much, this will probably be good right. Maybe I should hate you too. Then maybe I’d feel better, right? But...”
“Stop!” Chinen yelled.
He had heard enough of this, Yuto was never like this. Hearing Yuto would leave JE, would leave him and hate him, he definitely didn’t want that the most, definitely did not want that! Why was this happening? Unable to think he quickly sat down onto the bench and embraced Yuto into his arms, holding the boy tightly, he allowed the other boy to rest his head against the nape of his neck.
His eyes widened, “Ch-Chinen, what’s going on? Don’t you hate me, why are you h-”
“Shut up! Just shut up and let me do what I want to do for once okay?” It was more of a declaration to himself than Yuto if anything. Yuto’s back that was once shaking slowly started to calm. He was still confused as to what was happening. Too tired to fight back, he found himself slowly feeling comforted by just the mere warmth from the other boy.
“Please don’t say things like leaving JE, and hating me, and hating yourself okay?” He tightened his hold on the other boy. “This is not the Yuto I know, you’re stronger than this.”
“But don’t you hate me,” his voice was shaky, “isn’t it better if I were gone?”
“What do you mean gone, you can’t mean you want to die?! I won’t let you!” He squeezed tighter.
“Um, Chinen your crushing me, and I didn’t go that far, I don’t want to die so don’t worry.”
“Oh,” Chinen loosened his grip somewhat embarrassed; he slowly moved out of the embrace and put both hands onto Yuto’s cheeks wiping his tear stained face with his thumbs.
“Now you listen here, I told you before right? Yuto is very very cute! If you leave your fans will be sad, so don’t be so selfish and decide things on your own like that.” He couldn’t tell Yuto that it was in fact he, himself who would be the saddest, he just couldn’t, it wasn’t the time for that, not yet anyway. Embracing him once again he continued, “And I’m sure your parents are having a tough time, adults are like that, it has nothing to do with you so stop thinking that way.”
Yuto nuzzled his face into Chinen’s shoulder so that only his eyes could be seen; sniffling a few times he replied shakily, “You really think so?”
Chinen nodded and then a second time more vigorously for emphasis, “Mm.”
He held him for what seemed like eternal bliss for Chinen, as time passed Yuto’s weight seemed to become heavier and suddenly he could hear steady breaths against his chest. Gently moving he was surprised to find Yuto sleeping.
‘Oh Yuto, you’re still the same after all, always so trusting,’ he thought lovingly giving him a soft peck on the cheek. Secretly apologizing to Yuto for stealing a kiss, he watched the boy sleep soundly with a silly grin plastered onto his own face.
Snuggling against the other boy for warmth he felt a new found happiness and whispered quietly to Yuto, “I’m sorry I didn’t realize sooner, I’ll never leave you alone again. I will be the one to make you happy, not Keito.”
With that he felt his own lids become heavy as the smell of Yuto enveloped him into a blissful dream.
